Keeping Up With Our Travel Writer

Keeping Up With Our Travel Writer

By Mona Metzger

We are very lucky to have travel writer, Tracy Barnett, contributing to our website.    Tracy is a Houston-based writer and bilingual multimedia journalist specializing in sustainable travel, particularly throughout Texas, the Southwestern US and Latin America. Before becoming a travel writer, she worked as an environmental reporter, as an immigration affairs reporter and as a founder and editor of publications for the Latino immigrant community.

She has served as travel editor of the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News. As an independent writer, she seeks to integrate the issues she is most knowledgeable and passionate about: sustainability, cultural exchange and travel.

Since mid-August, Tracy has been on the road--traveling and writing about some very interesting places.  She has stayed in touch with us, sharing her adventures with the magic of her words.  Here's where she's been and what she's had to say:

August 15, 2009: Kayaking the Great Salt Lake

I’d never have believed you could pack so much life into two days. Salt Lake City and the surrounding countryside offer so much to the traveler, it really deserves a week or two. Possibly even a lifetime.

August 21, 2009: There's Krishna in them thar hills

South of Salt Lake City lies a host of beautiful attractions - most incongruous of which is a Krishna temple in the high desert plains near Spanish Fork. It's called the Sri Sri Radha Temple and it's truly an amazing site, set as it is among the sagebrush with the Wasatch Range as a backdrop.

August 22, 2009: Symphony on a ski slope
Temperatures hovered around 45 and threatened to plunge into the 30s when we arrived in Park City. This wouldn't be a problem if we'd planned to cozy up at the fireplace of the rustic chic Stein Erikson Lodge and enjoy the abundant amenities - but our hosts had quite a different plan for us.

August 24, 2009: Park City: A summertime eco-adventure

Mention Park City and Gortex-clad skiers come to mind among the Christmas-card-pretty lodges nestled among the snowy peaks. But once the snow melts and the summer sun warms those picturesque peaks, another, greener scene emerges, and that's the one we were treated to on this trip.

August 29, 2009: San Antonio with Peter Greenberg

From the brilliant murals on the city's West Side to the Barney Smith Toilet Seat Art Museum on the East Side, San Antonio never fails to surprise and delight.
So I was thrilled when I received an invitation to join Travel Detective Peter Greenberg on his excellent travel show, Peter Greenberg Worldwide, broadcast from the River Walk.
In honor of the occasion, I put together a list of my favorite San Anto sights and experiences. Hear the podcast here, and browse Peter's site for a wealth of travel news. Peter's logged more miles than anyone I know, and amazingly, he finds time to serve as a volunteer firefighter in Long Island on the weekends.
