What is GREEN?

Everytime I try to define green, I always begin with what it isn't.  It is my way of stripping away the stereotype, I suppose.  Simple subtraction of all the distracting things I hear about green in commericials mostly.  Green is not a certification, a product, it's not a building, a place or a tree.  It's not water or an electric car.  Green is not the environment--it's awareness about how our choices and decisions affect the environment.

Yes, there are green products, green services, green initiatives for the environment but the green I'm talking about here is a green YOU.  What can YOU, I, WE do to be more green?  And what does it mean to be GREEN as a person and make green minded choices?  In order to make green choices, we must be informed. Otherwise, we are doing what we've always done which has devastating consequences on our environment and the earth.  Switching from a non green prouduct to a green product is really just the tip of the (melting) iceberg.  There is so much more we can do.

Green is a lifestyle.  It begins with some level of awareness, followed by a desire to change  and then a process of creating new habits.  Green is learning, being willing to learn and teaching others.  Its change.  It is realizing that change needs to happen, being part of the change and motivating and inspiring others to make a change too.  And it's habits.  Doing what you know is best for--well, you, your family, your community and the environment.

Being green is not easy--until you learn the consequences of the alternative.

Green is a lot like love.  It's a verb, not a noun.
