Houston's Latest Public Art - This is Houston

On my way to meet a friend for lunch, I noticed a HUGE crowd at California & Montrose. Here's what I found...um...a BEAUTIFUL experience! A couple, actually.

It was the public art unveiling of "This Is Houston." This is Houston is an extraordinary mosaic mural...details below so I won't go into that.

It was magical for me. As I looked around, I was instantly reminded me of just how GREEN art really is--and I don't mean the green theme in this piece. I mean public art is GREEN. Authentic, organic, grass-roots, home-grown...GREEN. Did you get the tweet?

So anyhow, after I had lunch with my friend, I went back to take photos (I will post them below if I figure out how to download them to my computer off of my iphone). While there (this second time), I had the privilege to meet a very special l soul--Dalton DeHart. He was taking photos too.
How I met him: the wind blew my skirt up, yes literally--just like Marilyn! and I thanked him for not snapping THAT photo! His energy and smile was immediately irresistible! So we talked and laughed for a good while. Turns out Mr. Dalton is a local, celebrity photographer--as in, he's the celebrity, not the people he photographs...although, I'm quite certain he's done that too! Anyhow, you can find him on p. 48 of this months OutSmart! He's so lovely...but more about him later Friend.

Ok...about the art work: YOU HAVE TO SEE IT! A drive by won't do...stop the car, get out (yes, I know it's hot in Houston) and take a look up close! Experience it....feel it. It's amazing! Who knows, while you're out sweating in the heat, the wind could blow and well, you could be someone fabulous like it did!

Here's the details about the artwork:

Leadership Houston, a top organization developing Houston’s civic leaders, and the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston (MOCAH), the city’s most prominent public art developer, proudly unveiled the first public art project in the city to honor Houston’s broad diversity.

“This is Houston” was created as a unique art concept and community action project designed to beautiful our city and raise awareness of diversity by Leadership Houston Class XXVII. The tile mosaic mural includes images in the categories of art/diversity, education, the environment, healthcare, and leadership. It’s a one-of-a-kind iconic artwork designed to be a legacy and pay homage to our city.

The 6 ft. x 30 ft. custom mosaic mural will be permanently on display as a gift to the community of Montrose and the city of Houston at 2615 Montrose Boulevard at California Street, on the Hubbard Financial Services Building.

The artistic design of this mural was facilitated by MOCAH co-founder and artist, Reginald Adams.

The $25,000+ project was made possible by Class XXVII and community partners: Waste Management, United Way of Greater Houston, Ursula and Angel Jimenez, CenterPoint Energy, AT&T, Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing, JE Dunn, Texas Business Alliance, and Hubbard Financial Services.
