In the U.S., the average grocery store's produce travels nearly 1,500 miles between the farm where it was grown and your refrigerator.  A tremendous amount of fossil fuel is burned to transport foods such long distances, releasing emissions and other pollutants that contribute to global climate change, acid rain, smog and air pollution.  In contrast, local and regional food systems produce 17 times less CO2.

The 2009 holiday season was a tough one for retail businesses. In November, their sales increased just 1.8 percent over low 2008 numbers—failing to keep pace with inflation. December was worse, with sales actually falling three tenths of a percent from 2008.

Saint Arnold Brewery will soon call 2007 Lyons Avenue home. The transition began in 2007 when they won the bid on the HISD Food Service building. The redevelopment effort is expected to take a year and cost a total of almost $6 million.
