The New Houston: It's not what you think
By Tracy Barnett
September 2009
It was the perfect New Houston moment: A Pavarotti-like voice pulsed over the green lawns and the sparkling lake of Discovery Green. A sumptuously dressed cast beamed Macbeth from an inflatable screen, towering over a thousand people of all ages, colors and sizes. Some lounged in lawn chairs or on blankets spread on the green grass; some watched from the patios of nearby restaurants. Some munched hamburgers; others drank beer.
Double Green: Volunteer and Art
By: Mona Metzger
September 2009
We all know that art is green--well, most art and mostly art cars. Many things that would have ended up on landfills adorn cars. We also know that no organization knows art cars quite like the Orange Show. If you don't, I must ask: where is that cave you live in here in Houston?
If you're feeling like a double dose of green, here's your chance: Volunteer with the Orange Show and help make mini art cars at the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown.
Here's the info:

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center on May 20 celebrated the grand opening of its new Mobile Operations Complex. The 85,000-square-foot “green†facility at 9990 Fannin replaces the warehouse that was lost to a fire in 2005, and is the new home to more than 200 employees in the Donor Collections, Central Supply and Vehicle Maintenance Departments. It will be the launching point for more than 5,000 mobile blood drives held each year.
On my way to meet a friend for lunch, I noticed a HUGE crowd at California & Montrose. Here's what I found...um...a BEAUTIFUL experience! A couple, actually.
It was the public art unveiling of "This Is Houston." This is Houston is an extraordinary mosaic mural...details below so I won't go into that.
It was magical for me. As I looked around, I was instantly reminded me of just how GREEN art really is--and I don't mean the green theme in this piece. I mean public art is GREEN. Authentic, organic, grass-roots, home-grown...GREEN. Did you get the tweet?
