BCO: Farmers Markets Bike Tour

Bayou City Outdoors, a very active and social outdoor club, hosts Farmers Markets Bike tours.  Houston has several Farmers Markets that bring in local, organic produce every Saturday.  Touring the markets on your bike is a sure way to get exercise, learn the markets,  take home a bounty of beautiful produce, breads, sauces and jams and experience Houston in a completely different way.

The tour begins at 8:30am when they meet for coffee at the Houston Farmers Market located at Rice Stadium Parking Lot, Entrance 13A, off Greenbrier between University and Rice Blvd. They will visit 3-5 markets while riding side streets, trails and residential roads for this approximately 15 mile, 3 hour ride.  The ride includes generous stops.

It is recommended you wear layers since this can be a cold ride during the winter in Houston.  Also bring along an extra back pack to carry your purchases, drink plenty of fluids and wearing a hat is strongly suggested.  Bike helmets are required and ensuring your bike is good mechanical order before the ride is encouraged.  They will have a bike pump on hand.

If you’d like to join them but don’t own a bike, Island Bicycles rents bikes for $20/day and West End Bicycles rents bikes for $25 per day.  If you are a member of Bayou City Outdoors and do not have bike they will loan you a bike for the ride.
