  • Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day
    05/18/2012 - 8:00am

National Bike to Work Day was started by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956. Since then, this day has grown and developed into a nationwide event. Local, regional, and national bicycle advocacy groups participate to encourage people to commute to work using a bicycle.

Join thousands of other Americans for the Annual Bike to Work Day. Whether you are environmentally conscious or just love the exercise, biking to work is a great way to avoid the commuter traffic and stay in shape!

    Message from Energy Corridor:
Meet us at Terry Hershey Park for refreshments, giveaways, and other cool prizes. Biking to work is so much fun and we can show you a route that works best for your commute and even match you with a buddy that you can ride with. For more information please call 281-759-3800 or email jnunez@energycorridor.org

  • Farmers Market Bike Tour
    05/19/2012 - 8:00am - 12:00pm

Bayou City Outdoors, a very active and social outdoor club, hosts Farmers Markets Bike tours. Houston has several Farmers Markets that bring in local, organic produce every Saturday. Touring the markets on your bike is a sure way to get exercise, learn the markets, take home a bounty of beautiful produce, breads, sauces and jams and experience Houston in a completely different way.

The tour begins at 8:30am when they meet for coffee at the Houston Farmers Market located at Rice Stadium Parking Lot, Entrance 13A, off Greenbrier between University and Rice Blvd. They will visit 3-5 markets while riding side streets, trails and residential roads for this approximately 15 mile, 3 hour ride. The ride includes generous stops.

It is recommended you wear layers since this can be a cold ride during the winter in Houston. Also bring along an extra back pack to carry your purchases, drink plenty of fluids and wearing a hat is strongly suggested. Bike helmets are required and ensuring your bike is good mechanical order before the ride is encouraged. They will have a bike pump on hand.

If you’d like to join them but don’t own a bike, Island Bicycles rents bikes for $20/day and West End Bicycles rents bikes for $25 per day. If you are a member of Bayou City Outdoors and do not have bike they will loan you a bike for the ride.

  • Transition Houston Permablitz
    05/19/2012 - 8:30am - 1:30pm

Transition Houston's May 2012 Permablitz will be hosted at a home near Shepherd and Buffalo Bayou. This will be our last Permablitz of the 2011-2012 season (we'll start back up in September), and also our contribution to the 2012 Transition Challenge!

We will meet for a light breakfast and refreshments at 8:30, then talk and walk the work to be done. Groups will be organized to do the work in which they are interested, but there will of course be opportunity to see what the others are doing too. It would helpful to be on time to start, so that we can finish the work before the heat of the day.

    Projects include:

    Building 3 raised bed gardens
    Planting Fruit Trees
    Planting Pollinator Gardens/Insectaries
The 'Blitz will conclude at 12:30, at which time all will gather for a potluck lunch to celebrate the morning's success!

Please remember to wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty, gloves, goggles (for those projects with flying debris), hat or sunscreen, and maybe mosquito repellent.

Bring a dish for the potluck, and if you can plates, cup, and eating utensils. If you can't bring something for the potluck please come anyway!

Please--if you have them--bring tools including especially shovels, planting trowels, and wheelbarrows. Thanks!

Important Parking Information: you may park in the driveway, but when it fills up you may also park on Troon (around the corner) or on Tiel (across the street). Be sure to read the parking restriction signs!

  • Houston Green Film Series: The Greenest Building
    05/23/2012 - 6:30pm - 9:00pm

Houston Green Film Series & AIA COTE present - THE GREENEST BUILDING -

" “The Greenest Building,” a new hour-long documentary presents a compelling overview of the important role building reuse plays in creating sustainable communities. Narrated by David Ogden Stiers, “The Greenest Building” explores the myth that a “green building” is a new building and demonstrates how renovation and adaptive reuse of existing structures fully achieves the sustainability movement’s “triple bottom line” – economic, social, and ecological balance. The film reveals: a) how reuse and reinvestment in the existing built environment leads to stronger local economies that can compete on a global scale, b) that sense of place and collective memory, while intangible, are critical components of strong sustainable communities, and c) the direct correlation between reuse of existing buildings and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, degradation of the natural environment and overuse of precious natural resources."

Turville, Jane. "The Greenest Building Film Documentary Available for Public Screenings." Preservation Alliance of Minnesota. Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, 2012. Web. 30 Apr. 2012. .
